A pleural effusion is fluid that builds up in the pleural space, between the parietal and visceral pleura in the chest. The larger the effusion, the more fluid it contains, the more effect it has on breathing. A pleural effusion on one side of the chest is a very suspicious finding that can indicate mesothelioma. The fluid can be removed by thoracocentesis.
