Peritoneum is the mesothelial lining inside the abdomen. One layer, called the visceral peritoneum, covers the organs, and another, called the parietal peritoneum lines the abdominal cavity. Peritoneal mesotheliomas arise from the peritoneal mesothelium, or peritoneum. After pleural mesotheliomas, peritoneal mesotheliomas are the second most common.
