Paracentesis is done to remove fluid from the peritoneal cavity, or abdominal cavity. It can be done for diagnosis or treatment. It is similar to a thoracocentesis, and is done with a needle and syringe. Fluid can be sent to the lab for analysis, in particular looking for cells of a mesothelioma.
