The mesothelium is a thin layer of cells that lines the inside of your chest cavity, the inside of your abdomen, and also covers the outside of your heart, as well as your lungs, and most of your internal organs. The cells secrete fluid that makes it easier for your organs to move as needed. For example, the lungs need to move as you breathe. Mesotheliomas are derived from mesothelial cells.
