The illness caused directly by exposure to asbestos fibers. It occurs after years of exposure to the fibers, which damage the lungs. It takes some 20 to 30 years after before symptoms appear. The fibers cause scarring of the lungs, leading to cough, shortness of breath, and pain in the chest.
