Antiangiogenesis means prevention of the growth of new blood vessels. When talking about cancer, this would be a way to prevent cancer from growing. It could even cause death of the cancer cells if they aren’t getting enough nutrients. There are drugs that can interfere with many of the chemicals that cause angiogenesis, which could be effective as cancer chemotherapy. A number of drugs are being tested for this use. There are many others on the way. One, bevacizumab (Avastin) has already been FDA approved for use in treating metastasized colorectal cancer, non-small-cell lung cancer and some breast cancers. It has been proven to delay tumor growth and extend the life of patients.
