There are three main types of treatment for mesothelioma at this time. They are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Most often, at least two types of treatment are given, sometimes all three. The best combinations of treatment and the order they should be given for the best outcomes are part of ongoing research.
Which treatment or treatments you will have depends on many factors, including the stage of your tumor, your overall health, and where your tumor is located.
Surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible is usually performed if the patient’s general health will permit it. Then chemotherapy may be used to kill remaining tumor cells. Radiation therapy can also be used in this way. Radiation therapy is almost never used alone for treatment.
Chemotherapy with multiple drugs is the best choice for anyone who is not strong enough to withstand a major surgical procedure or whose cancer is not possible to remove.
