Are there specific tests that will be done in order to decide if I can have surgery?

In addition to performance status estimates, specific areas of functioning will be tested. Before a patient can have surgery that may involve removing all of a lung, the person’s lung function must be assessed, in order to know if that patient can function with only one lung. Heart function will also be checked, by a cardiologist. You might need an echocardiogram, and possibly a stress test. For you to be able to tolerate the chest surgery, you heart must also be functioning well.

You must be in overall good health, as determined by a physical examination and all the additional tests – scans for cancer spread, pulmonary (lung) function tests, echocardiogram (a measure of heart function), and blood tests  must all indicate that you can handle the surgery.

In addition, there should be no evidence that the mesothelioma has spread. This usually cannot be determined with absolute certainty before surgery, but all the scans and tests must not show any spread of the disease.
