What will be done to prepare me for surgery? What can I do myself?

You will already have had many tests to determine the state of your health. Even so, some will be repeated about 3 days before surgery.

Your medications will be reviewed. You will have to stop anything that can “thin” the blood. That includes aspirin, medications like ibuprofen, coumadin, and Plavix, among others. It also includes a number of herbal supplements.

You will want your nutritional status to be the best possible, so during the time you are waiting for your surgery, you should try and eat as well as possible, especially high calorie and high protein meals, so you do not lose weight. You may be referred to a dietician if this is an issue. In addition to eating well, you should not be smoking.

If there is time, you can donate your own blood which can be used if necessary during your surgery. Your family members can also donate blood.
